SB2 - Is technology scrambling my baby's brain? - Research

Is technology scrambling my baby's brain?

An article which I have just read on Pocket. Points out how we can be very quick to suggest that technology is very bad for children's brains however he is not bias and uses research to back up this point. However Popper goes on to talk about how he thinks it is important for his child to learn about these technologies because when he is an adult this will be a majority of jobs are. although he does point out that technology most likely would have changed by the time his child is a teen. So it is important to just teach them the basics together as a bonding experience.

SB2 - Type Form for questionaires.

While researching I found this really awesome way of making questionnaires which i will use for primary research!

SB2 - List of sources.

Quite interesting not super relevant but if I decide to go further down the road of notifications would be userfull as it has a further reading list.  -  https://medium.com/digital-journalism-rocks/hey-publishers-your-push-notifications-suck-heres-how-to-improve-them-fc67ffa4a117#.6f723ps4i

SB2 - Whats the Deal with notifcations?

http://elitedaily.com/life/generation-notification-science-behind-notifications-obsessed/866812/

"Notifications heighten our self-worth, are how we know someone is listening to us and caring about what we have to say.'

"They’re the other half of a conversation."

Back by "Ford’s 2014 consumer survey reports that 62 percent of adults felt better about themselves after getting positive reactions to what they shared on social media"

"We simply want to be recognized." Whys is this? why are we not satisfied with real life recognition, family, friends?

"It’s all about the dopamine, the chemical associated with reward and motivation response in the brain, that emerges when we receive a Facebook notification."

"Receiving a notification gives us the power to disregard it, which adds on to how in-demand we already feel when we receive one.." Recieving and not responding is still fulfilling our addiction.

How can we rethink the notification system?

SB2 - 505 - Questions

Questions to answer through research

  1. Is social media having an affect on our mental health?
  2. Has there been a rise in mental health conditions or are we just more aware now?
  3. Is social media making us more creative, eg snapchat?
  4. Is social media helping us to connect more?
  5. Has social media created new social issues in real life. For example social media jealousy getting in the way of a relationship?
  6. Are we addicted to our phones/social media/notifications?
  7. What are the benefits of social media?
  8. What is next for social media?
  9. Can we design to avoid some issues. For example design to not create addictive habits. SNAPCHAT!?
  10. How dopamine is realised when we get a notification?
  11. How much energy does our brain use up on these apps?
  12. What is the relationship between generations and social media? Does it affect generations differently?
  13. Why do we love social media so much?
  14. Why do we want everyone knowing our business?

SB1 - Dark Room - Experimentation

Today I went to the dark room in vernon street and was shown how to get up the exposure unit to create photograms, The process was very simple and I learnt that prep is much more important than the actual creation when it comes to these photograms. Firstly I learnt how to make test strips then tested movement on a smaller sheet then placed all I had down to see what worked visually. I Plan to mock up some layouts on photoshop for next time and include type.

SB1 - Bike Parts - Found - Networking

For one of my current idea for studio brief one I wanted to experiment with different bike parts on photograms however I didn't have any bike parts so I asked around the studio and found out that josh has a friend with tons of old bike parts. So through talking and connecting with friends and other students on the course I have managed to find what i was looking for as cheaply as possible. I feel this is much more accessible this year as we are all a relatively close course group. I think trips such as Berlin really help to improve this aswell. Anyway back to the parts I will go through and think of some ideas but basically I think alot will be trial and error from now. I have sorted a time and date to go to the dark room with a student from photography who is going to show me how its done and just explain a few things to me. On wednesday I will uplaod what I create and if I think its a path I can continue down or not.

Self intuitive Crit - 505

On Wednesday I joined a self setup crit between a few class mates. Going through my 505 Ideas to help resolve a path to go down. I found it very useful but more just listening to others than my own actual feedback. I find listening to others ideas and how people have reached there idea very beneficial to my own practice. Feedback for my first idea was nearly all positive howevr I still feel slightly stuck as to how I would execute it. Thea had a nice suggestion of playing around with type in the composition of the photogram something I had not actually thought about. Anita suggested using stencils rather  than actual bike parts for ease however I would really like to use real parts because of curves etc. I feel it would give it more life. For my second project feedback, It was more peoples thoughts on the issue and it seemed that people ethier agreed or actually had there own story to tell about when social media had upset them or worked negativly. This could be something to investigate further by asking people about there storys. This is something I could set up in the coming weeks.

SB1 - Getting in touch with the dude himself - Boff - Research

So as there was information lacking for me to look at about the exhibition I email Boff asking if he could send me over a essay he wrote, when we got back to me he actually said he could do one better and send me over a publication piece they was handing out on the day. I havent received it yet but will post more when I do.

SB1 - Simple - Idea - 505/

When you really break down what a bike is you quickly see how simple the idea is. Boff seems to touch onto this point also within his distribution of the bicycle in his exhibition. I would like to experiment with using simple shapes from the form of a bike. This could be in the form of a photo vectorised maybe or using photogram technique. The concept of this idea is to show the simplify of the form by bringing the design itself down to the bare minimal, could possibly be seem as minimalism or as French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

"Perfection is Achieved Not When There Is Nothing More to Add, But When There Is Nothing Left to Take Away"

Quick Example

SB1- L'Erotica - Research - 505

ART.  1 – DATE and PLACE
L’Eroica is a non-competitive cycling event (from now on also defined as ride or, incorrectly, competition or race) which will take place in Gaiole in Chianti, Siena, Italy on Sunday, 1 October 2017. The ride is inspired by historical cycling and the routes include long segments of gravel roads. Participation in L’Eroica is dedicated to cyclists dressed in vintage or vintage-inspired cycling gear, riding historical or vintage-style bikes, as described in Article 6 and in the INSPIRATION section of www.eroica.cc and www.eroicagaiole.it.

L'erotica is a cycling event which began in italy and has made its way over to britain in the form of erotica Britannia, it is the celebration of vintage bicycles and takes people back to the 'golden era' of cycling. Its very relevant to my current poster event which is celebrating the bicycle in all its simplicity and the people who ride daily not just race. Looking at the posters they seem to take influences from much older cycling posters such as fig one which use illustration along side bright colours. I can appreciate this approach however I am not an illustrator nor am i very good at illustrating, so i will actually avoid using illustrations but will take inspiration from the colour and sheer patriotism you get from the posters.
