OUGD404 - Study Task 5 - Cannon

Line, Point, plane

These are the building blocks of design. These elements are the fundamental tools to designers to create ever aspect, icons, texture etc.

Rhythm and Balance

Balance is within our everyday lives we use it to walk and stand aswell as been it within our lives, making it something we can sense within design as we have a intuitive relationship with both balance and imbalance. It can be used to activate elements within a space, it gives the impression of something being within proportion. Larger objects are a counter points to smaller ones; dark objectors to lighter ones.

Scale

Scale is how large or small something is it is a important principle within design and varies between what is being designed. It can be used to create importance and meaning when contrast.

Texture

Golden Ratio 8:13 this forms the basis of paper size. Its principles can be used to achieving balanced designs.

Using grids in graphics design is nessary to create clean, clear and effective work. It is the fundamental step in stepping up the quality of work. It helps with constancy and structure used for consistent layout in publications.

Avoid widows and orphans, by eliminating widows and orphans within work you can increase professionalism. Drew de Soto’s explanation from ‘Know Your Onions: Graphic Design’, “A widow is a term for a line of text that belongs to a paragraph and has moved over to the next column. An orphan is similar, but a single word on its own on a line, poor little thing.”

White Space

allows the text to breath and stops over crowding. Its helpful got an over complicated publication. depending on the context, determine how much white space is needed.
