OUGD404 - Study Task 4 - Figure/Ground

Magazine: Nest

The use of white space in Nest helps emphasis pieces of work drawing more attention to them even though they are smaller the large amount of negative space makes them feel important. It helps divide the mag up. It also gives a sense of luxury to the magazine, A study I looked at found a link to the amount of white space used within a magazine and the salary of the customers who buy these magazines, the results where the more white spaces the higher the salary. It prevents over crowding within the magazine also as it is not a huge mag it gives a more profession look and feel.

Magazine 2: Dank

Dank use negative space much more broadly than the nest. Often starting with full page spreads then moving on to using different amounts of white space. Adverts tend to use the full page such as levis this is because they are paying for the space so they want to use it all. white backgrounds are used when showing a range of images. using white space allows to create focal points on pages this is shown in Image 3 where the white space allows for some images to be larger than others giving them a large amount of importance.
