OUGD406 - Study Brief 1 - Idea Generation

To begin this brief I decided to thumbnail as many ideas as i could for each song without listening to them. I got a range of quick idea from his but nothing substational (Fig 1).  After this I listened to each song and continued to brain storm ideas (Fig 2). I eventually chose to do Tame impala - the less I know the better. This was because I really wanted to experiment with colour, something I haven't done much with since beginning the course. For research into this I looked at off the wall - psychedelic Rock posters. I didn't actually find a great deal but it defiantly helped me through the different colour schemes in some posters. Now when going through these ideas a few stood out to be potential final resolutions with one which I decided to experiment with. My only issue with some of these idea was how heavily influenced I was from the music video of the song, within feedback it was later pointed out that the video is somebody else interpretation of the song. This really had an impact on my later idea generation I struggled to get away from the ideas within the video so much so I eventually decided to move onto a new track. However I still have produced some pieces for this song. Looking at some of my final ideas for this song, The first being to drip paint to create a circle of colour representing the music on the vinyl, as well as a few connotations to the music video such as the basketball court and a scene where paint was used. I really thought this idea could go somewhere however from feedback i found this was also a common idea amongst peers, this made me thing if it was a obvious one for peers it would be for others entering the compition. Another I would like to experiment with is using a lightening bolt graphic taken from a baseball joursy within the music video. Again this is taken from the music video but this one is much more subtle than the other which I feel works to my advantage rather than disadvantage. I wanted to use stencil to create a psyical version using spray paint. I work a lot digitaly but really enjoy working practically so for this brief I really wanted to try out as many practical options as possible. Another way to go about it would be screen print as well as spray paint. screen printing the base and using cans for patterns. My final favourite idea also my crit groups favourite was 'fuck trevor' this relates back to the song as it is about trevor stealing the girl he fancies from him. With this I want to experiment with different ways of producing such as letter press, vector and using clay. I feel like this is quite personal to the song it has a slight sense of humour to it as well as being slightly provocative through the language. I also like the simplicity of the idea getting people to think who is trevor and if they know the song well enough helping them actually figure it out. I want to play with both colours and monochrome.

When idea generating I became very stuck with tame impala, I was struggling to get away from the music video so I decided to switch to dream 3 as I felt that I could take this is many more directions however I did not drop my tame impala vinyl cover.
When I began to struggle with ideas I decided to look for new ways to come up with inspiration one way I took was from reading poetry. One I took influence from for

Once in the dream of a night I stood

Lone in the light of a magical wood,
Soul-deep in visions that poppy-like sprang;
And spirits of Truth were the birds that sang,
And spirits of Love were the stars that glowed,
And spirits of Peace were the streams that flowed
In that magical wood in the land of sleep.

 Song of a Dream – Sarojini Naidu

This influenced me to play around with plants, forests and animals. All represented within dreams, I chose to play around with animals such a sloths and kolas both have connotations to sleep, what the album is created with in mind.
