OUGD406 - Studio Brief 1 - Research

I To begin my research I looked into album covers from my Spotify that I stand out to me. What tends to stand out the most to me within a good album cover is something which uses colour well. I feel that colour is a very important part of album cover design to really grab peoples attention.

I then went onto looking at some secret 7 covers themselves. What i found was they tended to be slightly more ambiguous then where some which would be the opposite side of this such as 'it doesnt matter who it is or what it sounds like as long as we design the cover' A clever approach that plays on designing. I really enjoyed the illsutrated approaches and found these to be the most influential. I kept this in mind when coming up with ideas.

Petter Saville and his inspiration, What i found from reading up about peter saville was he took inspiration from the things around him. Things happening within his day to day life would have an impact for example his true faith album cover was inspired from a leaf falling from outside his car window. This research has helped me to realise if i take step back and look around slightly more I could find lots of new influences.

Looking into illustrations I found a theme of floating but with the sense of water around. I feel like this represents dreams well due to its distortion of reality.

Reading through people of prints - print isn't dead got me thinking about alternative method to digital. The interview with Mr smith inspired me to give letter press a go within my experimentation. Within the next week I will be testing this method.

I had a look into poetry to find inspiration after reading an interview by mr smith where i says some inspiration comes from poetry I thought this would be a good place to look. I found that it gave me some good ideas of how people see dreams.

Dream Deferred

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?

Or fester like a sore--
And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

Martin wittfooth

I found these illustration by martin wittfooth really great in the way which they make a statement about our planet and global warming. This is something I will take into consideration, as a statement create a much more powerfull piece of work.
