Chat with Alyson
Alyson is a helper at LCA she works within the student's administration and thus has to deal with or hears about students who are suffering from an issue, usually to do with mental health. I spoke to her about my current project and she identified to me there is indeed and issue here as 9 out 10 times she says social media is mentioned within students problem. She felt this could be because social media puts people into 'tribes' this can make it easier for people to bully others or feel bad if they are not part of the tribe. She felt people use it as a method of instant gratification especially with selfies which are often self-censored and not the real you! The question of who am I can quickly become lost in a mist of self-staged images, tweets, posts etc. However, she also noted there are many positives to facebook one for her being facebook as a tool for activism an interesting insight i thought.although ending with the note that social media encourages people to constantly seek approval and when these elements begin to take over your own image of yourself this is when it can become harmful for youths mental health.
Chat with Fran
Fran is my flatmate has a little sister, we were speaking about the topic of social media use among youths. She was telling me about how they will use snap chat every day to keep up a streak with people and this streak can become very important to them. Lossing the streak would then cause them to become stressed and possible sad. Snapchat streak is a feature created by snap chat It seems to me the only use of this feature is to help create little addictions within the app to get people to come back and use it again. She also spoke about how many people her sisters and her friends seem to be interacting with over social media who they do not know.
Chat with Nat
Nat is my other flat mate I recently spokke to her on the topic as she deleted both Instagram and snap chat. She said it was for two reasons one they was a big distraction and second they was making her feel bad about herself.
