Research - Studio Brief 2 - Old cookbook vs new cook books

I want my publication to resemble a journal but still taking aspects from cooking books old and new. For the research I have acquired recipe books old and new. Some dating as far back at the 1930. It is interesting to see the diffrent ways these books have been layout out and the typography used. Firstly looking at all the books I noticed that the older cook books all seem to be hard backs with a cover over them, they also all use serif fonts. One book which I looked at was Hering's Dictionary of classical and modern cookery. What I found interesting about this publication specially was the way each chapter had been arranged. As you can see form the pages it has been cut so each section can be easily found, This is something I would defiantly consider within my design however may not work as well because of the size, Herring's is a much larger publication in terms of content. What I also found was really nice but different was the table of content is within the last part of the publication on a thick coloured stock. The layout of this book I think is brilliant very different to normal dictionaries.

Next I had a look at the larder chef what stood out to me within this book was the title pages within the book, the title had been aligned right to left with a thin line unscoring and over scoring throughout. I also found the serif typeface to really stand out with flowing curves on the capitals, Something I would like to consider using within my publication to keep a traditional feel to the book. Drawings are also used throughout the book this is something I could use for a sections within my publication. I want to achieve something diffrent something slightly odd with diffrent stocks, sections drawing, photographs etc, gaining insight from all these books helps inform these decisions.

Looking at newer cooking books you can see they begin to use san serif and fonts. There is also a lot more images and colour throughout. the layout of images seems to be full page images along side a recipe this is something I want to avoid within my publication. One book I was looking at was British food bible as I want my publication to focus on food heritage and the culture within the region, This was helpful. Although the focus on birtish food runs throughout this book the beginning section is what focuses on the information. This section is where I can take some ideas on how to set out this information in regards to my other cuisines. within this sections smaller images in diffrent grid layouts are used. Now the second book I was looking at is world food greece, the food and the lifestyle. This focuses on the lifestyle more throughout the book in comparison to the british food. It also uses a wider range of layouts and type. I will be looking at this book in more depth.
